Annual Scholarship Campaign

As one of the most important charitable organizations in our region, the Penobscot Bay YMCA is
dedicated to changing lives for the better. Whether we are helping someone reach fitness goals or
providing child care services for a working family, we have an impact on people’s lives every day.
Perhaps Susan summed it up best after the YMCA helped her and her family get back on their feet after
unemployment and health-related issues brought extraordinary hardship.
“I am most grateful to have my strength back with the help of the YMCA. The scholarship we received has
allowed my husband, daughter and me to maintain our membership while my husband has been out of work.
This has been a difficult time for us, and the Y has helped keep our family strong.”
It’s important for everyone to have access to these opportunities, regardless of their ability to pay, so
through its charitable efforts and the generosity of our donors, the Y is able to serve everyone who
wishes to participate. In fact, nearly two out of every ten people who use the YMCA receive financial
assistance. Last year alone we gave away nearly $200,000 in scholarships.
That’s why we need your help. As a charitable institution, the YMCA relies on donations for nearly 20%
of its revenue each year. Our Annual Scholarship Campaign finances all of our scholarships. It also
supports free community services such as the Teen Center, Healthy Kids Day and the Learn to Swim
program. It also helps keep membership fees and program costs as low as possible for everyone.
