Case Statement
The Penobscot Bay YMCA is one of the most important social service agencies in our region.
Yet few people realize that:
We serve people of all ages with wellness, recreational and social service opportunities that enrich
and support lives. The 5,000 members and 14,000 program participants we engaged in YMCA
activities last year represent only a fraction of the total population we serve. As a lead agent for
Knox County's Healthy Maine Partnership, we distribute nearly a half million dollars each year to
local agencies for physical activity, nutrition, and substance abuse prevention work, impacting the
overall health and wellbeing of thousands of individuals living and working in Knox County.
The YMCA is completely self supportive and does not receive any financial assistance from YMCA
of the USA, federal, state or local government. Revenue to support YMCA activities comes from
four distinct sources:
As an organization committed to its charitable purpose, the YMCA intentionally discounts the
cost of all memberships and services. In addition, nearly 20% of all YMCA members take
advantage of our scholarship program. In 2008 alone, awarded scholarships exceeded $160,000.
It is clear that the YMCA is much more than a pool and a fitness center!
After gaining a better understanding of the impact the YMCA is having on youth and families, we
hope that community members will support the YMCA financially. Please consider:

- Nearly 1,000 people each day access wellness activities at the YMCA
- We are the only provider of youth swim lessons in our service area
